Karnataka State Board Class 9 is an important stage in a student’s life as it builds the foundation for students to prepare for the Class 10 board exams in the next academic session. In Class 9, students study six subjects: two language subjects and four core subjects. All the subjects, except language papers, are offered in English and Kannada as medium of instruction.
Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board administers formal education to the students from Classes 1 to 12. The school education system is categorised into primary (kindergarten), upper primary (Classes 1 to 5), secondary (Classes 6 to 8), lower secondary (Classes 9 and class 10), and upper secondary level (Classes 11 and 12). The Karnataka Governor approves the unification of the Pre-University and SSLC exams into a single board.
The Governor signed an amendment to the Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board (KSEEB) Act 1966, renaming it the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB).
The tests administered by this board will continue to be conducted independently. However, the primary administration of the Karnataka SSLC exams and the Karnataka PUC exams will be combined.

The Karnataka State Board introduced The CCE (Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation) design for secondary classes for Grades 1 to 12 and follows the framework in all schools associated with the Karnataka State Board. CCE was developed by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in 2009-2010 with a holistic education in mind. This was implemented as part of the Right to Education Act of 2009, with the goal of providing high-quality education to pupils aged 6 to 14.
CCE pattern comprises two types of tests: Formative and Summative. Formative tests include a student’s class performance, classwork, homework, submission of prescribed projects, and active involvement in various class events. Three-hour written tests were used in the Summative to assess students’ intellectual understanding. Formative Assessment (conducted four times during an academic session) accounted for 40% of the total.

Note that there are two summative assessments – one mid-year summative assessment, and one year-end summative assessment. Students of state board schools in Karnataka will take four formative assessments (FA) and one summative exam (SA) in classes 1 to 10. In the absence of final exams, experts have urged this measure for a more credible means of assessment.
In the context of the Covid pandemic, the Department of Public Instruction issued a circular on the continuous and comprehensive evaluation pattern for the academic year 2022-23. According to a circular issued, the mid-term tests will be skipped in favour of a four-formative and one-final summative exam pattern. Summative assessments have been given more weightage in classes 9 and 10.
In the months of September, October, December 2022, and January 2023, four formative exams will be given, each worth 50 marks. Students will have to submit two 15-marks projects and a 20-marks written test as part of the formative assessments, making a total of 50 marks in each FA. 200 marks obtained in the four formative assessments will be reduced to 20 marks later.
Students in classes 9 and 10 will complete a summative final exam for 80 marks. Candidates will be given a total of 100 marks based on their performance on a total of 20 marks formative and 80 marks summative assessments.
