img-icon

Converting Paise Into Rupees: Most of us use rupees as our unit of discretionary spending. We often talk about ‘rupee par value,’ but do we know the basics of currency conversion and some conversion rules? We see the numbers beside the pictures of items, using terms such as buy, sell, sale, cost, price and dollars. We learned about paise and rupees and converting paise into rupees as kids.

In mathematics, money can be defined as the medium of exchange, such as notes, coins, demand deposits etc., used to pay for commodities and services. We all know that 1 rupee equals 100 paise. The symbol of the Indian Rupee is \(₹\), and INR denotes the Indian rupee, which is the country’s official currency. If we do not have the exact amount of money, we need a combination of money or money conversion to make a payment.

What is Money?

Money is what we give for purchasing food, toys, candy, tickets for the movies, shopping, paying, and renting a house. We give money for purchasing anything. We give money in return for buying these things or anything. This means money is anything that people use to pay for services and goods and to pay people for their work.

Traditionally, money has taken different forms in different cultures, everything from salt, stones, and beads to gold, silver, and copper coins and, more recently, virtual currency has been used.

A currency is the system of money used in a country. ‘Rupee’ is the Indian currency. The symbol of the rupee is \(₹.\) The Rupee is a combination of Paise.

The ‘US dollar’ is the official currency of the United States of America. Like this, every country has a different currency.

Converting Paise into Rupees

Formulas for Converting Paise Into Rupees

Sometimes, we need to convert the money into different forms. Money can be converted into two forms.

  • Converting rupees into paise.
  • Converting paise into rupees.

Formulas:

\(1\) rupee \(=100\) paise

\(100\) paise \(=1\) rupee

\(1\) paise \( = \frac{1}{{100}}\) rupees

Example 1

To convert rupees into paise, multiply rupees by \(100.\)

For example: convert \(5\) rupees into paise.

We know that \(1\) rupee \(=100\) paise

Now, \(5\) rupees \(=5×100=500\) paise

Hence, \(5\) rupees is \(500\) paise

Example 2

For converting paise into rupees, divide the paise by \(100.\)

For example: convert \(800\) paise into rupees.

We know that \(100\) paise \(=1\) rupee

So, \(1\) paise \( = \frac{1}{{100}}\) rupees

Now, \(800\) paise \( = \frac{{800}}{{100}} = 8\) rupees

Hence, \(800\) paise is \(8\) rupees

1. For converting paise into rupees :

Put a decimal point after two digits from the right.

                                                                         OR

Count two digits from the right and put a point and also write \({\rm{Rs}}{\rm{.}}\) or \({\rm{Re}}{\rm{.}}\) in the beginning.

Remove the point and then remove \({\rm{Rs}}{\rm{.}}\) or \({\rm{Re}}{\rm{.}}\) and write the paise at the end.

                                                                      OR

Shift the decimal point to two places to the right.

Representation of Money in Terms of Coins and Notes

Coins with denominations \(1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 20\) and \(25\) were in use until some time ago, which became obsolete with time.

Representation of money in terms of coins and notes

Some of the coins that are used nowadays are given below,

Representation of money in terms of coins and notes

Apart from the above coins of denominations of \(₹\;20, ₹\;50, ₹\;60, ₹\;75, ₹\;100, ₹\;125, ₹\;150, ₹\;200, ₹\;500,\) and \(₹\;1000,\) introduced by the Government of India from time to time are present, but not used in practice much. Those are shown below.

Rules for Writing Money in Words and Figures

  • The abbreviation used for a rupee is \({\mathop{\rm Re}\nolimits} \) and for \(1\) rupee it is \({\mathop{\rm Re}\nolimits} .1\)
  • Rupees is written in short, as \({\rm{Rs}}{\rm{.,}}\) as \(5\) rupees is written as \({\rm{Rs}}.\,{\rm{5}}\)
  • For paisa we write \({\rm{p}}.\) It is written after the number of paise
    Example:
\(10\) paisa is written as \({\rm{10}}\,{\rm{p}}\)
\(5\) paisa is written as \({\rm{5}}\,{\rm{p}}\)
  • Suppose we need to write a sum of money involving both rupees and paisa. So, to express an amount consisting of both rupees and paisa, we use a decimal point. The numeral indicating rupees is written before this point, and the numeral indicating paisa is written after the point. We write \({\rm{Rs}}{\rm{.}}\) before the number of numerals.
    Example:
\(20\) rupees \(50\) paisa is written as \({\rm{Rs}}.\,{\rm{20}}.{\rm{50}}\)
\(4\) rupees \(25\) paisa is written as \({\rm{Rs}}.\,{\rm{4}}.{\rm{25}}\)
\(100\) rupees \(50\) paisa is written as \({\rm{Rs}}.\,{\rm{100}}.{\rm{50}}\)
  • If the given number of paisa is in one digit, then it is made a two-digit numeral by putting \(0\) before the single digit.
\(2\) rupees \(5\) paisa is written as \({\rm{Rs}}.\,{\rm{2}}.{\rm{05}}\)
\(15\) rupees \(7\) paisa is written as \({\rm{Rs}}.\,{\rm{15}}.{\rm{07}}\)
  • If the money is only in rupees, it is written as
    \(5\) rupees \({\rm{ = Rs}}.\,{\rm{5}}\) or \({\rm{Rs}}.\,{\rm{5}}.{\rm{00}}\)
  • If the money is only in paisa, it is written
    as \(45\) paisa \({\rm{ = Re}}.\,{\rm{0}}.{\rm{45}}\) or \({\rm{45}}{\mkern 1mu} \,{\rm{p}}\)

Facts

1. Rupees are greater than paise. So, to convert rupees into paise, multiply by \(100.\) and for converting paise into rupees, divide it by \(100.\)
2. We should always use two digits to express paise.
Example: \(5\) paise can be written as \(0.05\) paise, and \(90\) paise can be written as \(0.90\) paise.
