• Draupadi Murmu, India’s First Tribal And 15th President of India

Draupadi Murmu won the election to become India’s first tribal and 15th president. Following the third round of counting, Yashwant Sinha, the presidential candidate for the Opposition, admitted defeat.

Tribal leader Draupadi Murmu hails from Rairangpur in the Odisha province of Mayurbhanj. A leader with a quiet voice, Draupadi Murmu entered Odisha politics via pure effort. After winning the presidential election in 2022.

Draupadi Murmu became the second woman and first indigenous person to hold the highest office.

Murmu, 64, won with a commanding margin, receiving more than 64% of the valid votes. Ram Nath Kovind’s term as president expires on July 24, and Murmu will most likely take the oath of office on July 25.

• IIT Madras retains top position: NIRF rankings

The Union Minister of Education released the India Rankings 2022 of higher educational institutes. A robust and objective framework for assessment, accreditation and ranking will play a major role in enhancing higher education quality.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras maintained its position as the top institution in the nation for a fourth consecutive year, and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru was named the best university and research institution.

• All the institutions shall also be part of the NIRF ranking system.
• The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras, retained the top spot among institutes in the ‘Overall’ category for the Fourth Consecutive Year and the ‘Engineering’ category for the Seventh Consecutive Year.
• In the overall category, IIT Madras is followed by IISc Bengaluru in the second spot, while IIT Bombay has been ranked third.

• India’s first private rocket engine factory 

Agnikul Cosmos, a local space company, officially opened the nation’s first private rocket engine manufacturing on Wednesday. The facility in Chennai was opened by S. Somanath, the head of the Indian Space Research Organization, and N. Chandrasekaran, Tata Sons (ISRO) chairman.

According to the corporation, the new facility will use additive manufacturing technology to create 3D-printed rocket engines and develop engines for its rockets.

Agnikul Cosmos’ chief executive, Srinath Ravichandran, stated that the factory can now construct up to two rocket engines per week. This will enable it to produce enough machines for the anticipated end-of-the-year launch of its two-stage launch vehicle, Agnibaan.

• Jawaharlal Nehru Port becomes the first 100% Landlord Major Port

• India elected to UNESCO panel on Intangible Cultural Heritage

India has been elected to the Intergovernmental Committee of UNESCO’s 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) for the 2022-2026 cycle. India will be a part of two Committees of UNESCO – Intangible Cultural Heritage (2022-2026) and World Heritage (2021-2025).

What is Intangible Cultural Heritage according to UNESCO?

• Intangible cultural heritage includes oral traditions, performing arts, social practices, rituals, festive events, knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe or the knowledge and skills to produce traditional crafts.

• PM Modi unveiled 6.5m high National Emblem

Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the new emblem cast on the roof of the new Parliament building. It is 6.5m high and made of bronze.

About the new Parliament Project:

• The new building will have six granite statues of important personalities, four galleries each for the two Houses of Parliament, three ceremonial foyers, three India galleries, and one Constitution gallery.
• The new building for the Indian Parliament, designed by Bimal Patel of HCP Designs, Ahmedabad, includes triangular shapes and incorporates architectural styles from around India.
• Unlike the present Parliament building, there is no Central Hall, and the Lok Sabha chamber will be able to house 1,272 members in case of a joint session.
• The new Parliament building project was awarded to Tata Projects for Rs 971 crore. 
• The estimated project cost has shot up by nearly 24 per cent to about Rs 1,200 crore due to additional works, changes in the construction plan, and pandemic-related delays.

• ‘Youth in India 2022’ Report

Recently, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) released the ‘Youth in India 2022’ Report, which shows that the population share of the youth is starting to decline, whereas the share of the elderly is expected to increase during 2021-2036.

Key Findings of the report:

• The youth proportion has declined, and the elderly proportion is likely to rise between 2021-2036.
• The proportion of the Youth and Elderly Population will be 22.7 % by the year 2036.
•  Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh are projected to see a higher elderly population than the youth by 2036.
• Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan are projected to have over half (52%) of the country’s youth.

• India achieved clean energy targets before the deadline

Power Minister RK Singh said at the Sydney Energy Forum that India had achieved clean energy targets nine years ahead of schedule.

India has installed 162 GW of renewable energy capacity, which is 41% of the 402 GW of electricity installed.

In India, five new wetlands have been identified as being of international significance. As a result, there are now 54 Ramsar sites in the nation instead of 49. “Delighted to tell that 5 additional Indian wetlands have received Ramsar status as wetlands of worldwide importance,” stated Bhupender Yadav, the Union Minister of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change.

The five newly designated wetlands are:

• Karikili Bird Sanctuary, Tamil Nadu
• Pallikaranai Marsh Reserve Forest, Tamil Nadu
• Pichavaram Mangrove, Tamil Nadu

What is Ramsar Site?

Under the Ramsar Convention, a wetland site is defined as having international significance and is known as a Ramsar Site. The Iranian city of Ramsar, where this contract was signed, inspired the name Ramsar.

• Assam & Arunachal sign Namsai Declaration

Arunachal and Assam’s chief ministers signed a pact to resolve the border dispute. It is called Namsai Declaration, and its objective is to end border issues between the two states and to “restrict” the number of disputed villages to 86 instead of 123.

• The Namsai Declaration is a hugely significant and landmark progress towards enduring brotherhood, peace, and prosperity in the North East.

• Himachal Pradesh – First state to connect VLT with ERSS

Himachal Pradesh has become the first state in the country to connect all registered commercial vehicles equipped with Vehicle Location Tracking Device (VLTD) with Emergency Response Support System (ERSS). More than 9,423 vehicles have been registered and linked with ERSS. 

How does it work?

• The VLTD with ERSS and Command Control Center has been connected with Emergency Response Support System 112.  
• When the panic button is pressed, a signal would be received through satellite to 112, and the person in distress would be connected and alert the police.
• State Ranking Index for NFSA

The Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution released the 1st edition of ‘State Ranking Index for NFSA’ during the Food Ministers of States/UTs on ‘Food Nutrition and Security in India’.

About the Index:

• It captures the implementation of the Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS) under the National Food Security Act (NFSA). 
• The index is built on three key pillars:

1. NFSA— Coverage, targeting, and Act provisions
2. Delivery platform, and
3. Nutrition initiatives

Index rankings:

• Odisha topped the list of 34 states and Union territories (UTs), followed by Uttar Pradesh at the second spot and Andhra Pradesh at third amongst the General Category States in ‘The State Ranking Index for NFSA’.
• Under Special Category States/UTs, Tripura stood; first, second was Himachal Pradesh, and the third was Sikkim.
• In the list of 3 UTs where Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) – Cash is operational, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu are the top-ranked UT.

• Rajasthan launched Nation’s 1st digital Adalat 

India’s First AI-powered, end-to-end digital Lok Adalat, launched by NALSA Chairperson Uday Umesh Lalitduring the 18th All India Legal Services Authorities’ meet held in Jaipur, Rajasthan. 

Reason for setting up the digital Lok Adalat:

• India’s growing case pendency has been in the headlines recently, especially during the pandemic when the courts came to a standstill for a while. 
• A NITI Aayog report also suggested that it would take approximately 324 years to dispose of all the current cases in India. This situation in the Indian Dispute Resolution landscape calls for urgent technological intervention.

Justice Technology:

The Gujarati government announced a specific “Gujarat Semiconductor Policy 2022-27” to create at least 2,00000 new jobs over five years. The Dholera Special Investment Region will have a “semicon city” built by the Gujarati government. According to a press statement from the state administration, projects sanctioned under the Design-linked Incentive plan of the Government of India will not be qualified to receive benefits under the new policy.

• NAMASTE scheme formulated for cleaning sewers

Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Kaushal Kishore said the Government had formulated a ‘National Action Plan for Mechanised Sanitation Ecosystem’ (NAMASTE) scheme for cleaning sewers and septic tanks.

About the Scheme:

• The scheme is a joint venture between the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. 
• The aim is to achieve zero fatalities in sanitation work in urban India.
• The Ministry has shortlisted the types of machinery, core equipment for maintenance works, and safety gear for Safai Mitras. 
• India ranks 135 out of 146 in the Global Gender Gap Index

The World Economic Forum released the Global Gender Gap Index 2022, and it ranks India at 135 out of 146 countries. In 2021, India was ranked 140 out of 156 countries. Iceland has retained its position as the world’s most gender-equal country.

• Centre releases child protection scheme guidelines

Ministry of Women and Child Development (WCD) released new guidelines for Mission Vatsalya, an umbrella scheme for child protection services in the country. In the guidelines, states have been mandated to retain the official and original name of Mission Vatsalya to access Central funds and benefits.  

 What is Mission Vatsalya?

• It is the country’s umbrella scheme for Child Protection Services (CPS).

• It develops a sensitive, supportive and synchronised ecosystem for the development of children.
• Assists States/UTs in delivering the mandate of the Juvenile Justice Act 2015 and achieving the SDG goals.

• Kilo class submarine Sindhudhvaj decommissioned

The Navy’s submarine, INS Sindhudhvaj, was decommissioned from service at Visakhapatnam after 35 years. With this, the Navy now has 15 conventional submarines in service.

What are Kilo class submarines?

• The Kilo class, Soviet designation Project 877 Paltus, NATO reporting name Kilo, is a class of diesel-electric attack submarines originally designed in the 1970s and built in the Soviet Union for the Soviet Navy.
• The 10 Kilo-class submarines India bought from Russia between 1986 and 2000 are now down to seven conventional boats (as the navy calls submarines).

• DRDO successfully tested the first takeoff of an autonomous aircraft

The maiden flight of a new Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), an autonomous Flying Wing Technology Demonstrator, took off from the Aeronautical Test Range, Chitradurga, Karnataka.

• According to the official statement, this UAV is powered by a small turbofan engine. The entire system has been developed completely in India.
• It is a significant breakthrough in autonomous aircraft, which will pave the way for Aatmanirbhar Bharat regarding critical military systems.

• ‘SPRINT Challenges’ to boost indigenous tech for the Indian Navy

The Prime Minister unveiled ‘SPRINT Challenges’, aimed at boosting the usage of indigenous technology in the Indian Navy, during the Naval Innovation and Indigenisation Organisation (NIIO) seminar ‘Swavlamban’ in New Delhi.

About SPRINT Challenges:

• In a bid to achieve ‘Aatmanirbharta’ in defence and as part of ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’, NIIO, in conjunction with the Defence Innovation Organisation (DIO), aims to induct at least 75 new indigenous technologies/products into the Indian Navy. 
• This collaborative project is named SPRINT (Supporting Pole-Vaulting in R&D through iDEX, NIIO and TDAC).
• India’s Tejas is Malaysia’s ‘top choice’ to replace the MiG-29 fleet

India’s Tejas’, a single-engine fighter jet is Malaysia’s first choice to replace its ageing MiG-29 combat aircraft fleet, said R Madhavan, chairman of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). India benefited from the proposal to build the Su-30 facility.

Why Tejas?

• The Malaysian government also considered the JF-17 jet from China, the FA-50 from South Korea, and the MiG-35 and Yak-130 from Russia; however, they praised Tejas as a “far superior” aircraft.
• Despite the JF-17 being considerably less expensive, it could not match the technological specifications of Tejas’ MK-IA variant.

• The‘Dunagiri’, the fourth ship as a part of Project 17A Frigates, has the name of a mountain range in Uttarakhand.
• These are follow-on of the P17 Frigates (Shivalik Class) with improved stealth features, advanced weapons and sensors, and platform management systems. 
• The launch of the fourth ship within such a short span is a testimony to the impetus for self-reliant shipbuilding with a focused approach. 

About P17A:

• P17A ships have been designed in-house by the Indian Navy’s Directorate of Naval Design (DND), which has successfully spearheaded the design of numerous classes of indigenous warships. 
• It is a testimony of the nation’s unwavering efforts towards ‘AatmaNirbharata’ as 75% of the orders for equipment and system are also being placed on indigenous firms, including MSMEs.

• 75 newly-developed AI-enabled defence products launched

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh launched 75 newly developed AI products and technologies in the first-ever AI in Defence symposium in New Delhi.

About the event:

• The Artificial Intelligence in Defence’ (AIDef) symposium and exhibition were organised by the Department of Defence Production under the Ministry of Defence as a part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
• It aimed to advance “Atma Nirbharta” in the military sector.
• AI-enabled products are developed by the Armed Forces, research organisations, start-ups, and innovators.

• Ministry of Defence sets up an Apex Committee for Performance and Efficiency Audit                                                                                                                                            The Defence Ministry has set up an apex committee with the Defence Secretary as Chairman to conduct a Performance and Efficiency Audit into various aspects of its activities. 

Reason for setting up the committee:

• This kind of audit is expected to provide valuable inputs to the top management of the Ministry on specific shortcomings, if any, in the planning and execution of projects.
• It is a major shift from the existing transaction-based compliance audit to an outcome-based performance/ efficiency audit to enhance overall efficiency.
• The committee members include Vice Chiefs of the three Services, Secretary Defence (Finance), Chief of Integrated Staff Committee, Controller General of Defence Accounts, Director General (Acquisition) and other senior officials of the Ministry of Defence and Defence Research and Development Organisation.

• The PSLV Orbital Experimental Module is a platform that will help perform in-orbit experiments using the final, and otherwise discarded, stage of ISRO’s workhorse rocket, the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).
• The PSLV is a four-stage rocket where the first three spent stages fall back into the ocean, and the final stage (PS4), after launching the satellite into orbit, ends up as space junk.
• POEM has a dedicated Navigation Guidance and Control (NGC) system for altitude stabilisation.
• POEM carries six payloads, including two from Indian Space Start-ups, Digantara and Dhruva Space, enabled through IN-SPACe and NSIL.
• POEM will derive its power from solar panels mounted around the PS4 tank and a Li-Ion battery. It will navigate using Four Sun Sensors, a Magnetometer, Gyros & NavIC.

• If emissions continue to climb and temperatures reach around 4.9 degrees Celsius by the end of this century, nearly 40% of marine genera could perish by 2300 and 8% by 2100. 

How did Mass Extinction occur in the Permian era?

• During this period, land masses collided to form the supercontinent Pangaea. The supercontinent was arid; only a few parts received rainfall round the year.
• Towards the end of the era, a series of volcanic eruptions occurred in Central Siberia, injecting massive amounts of greenhouse gases (GHG) into the atmosphere. Then, as of now, the uncontrolled GHG emissions triggered climatic changes.
• It led to low oxygen and warm conditions driving marine organisms’ extinction 250 million years ago.

• High level of toxic chemical nonylphenol

A study revealed the presence of high levels of toxic chemical nonylphenol in drinking water across the nation. The toxic chemical in drinking water was 29 to 81 times higher than the permissible limit.
What is Nonylphenol?

• Nonylphenol is commonly used in the production of Nonylphenol Ethoxylates (NPEs), which are used as surfactants and in day-to-day consumer products such as detergents, wetting agents and dispersants.

Impacts:

• NP is an Endocrine disruptor associated with adverse effects like birth defects, skin and eye irritation etc. 
• There are no standards exclusively for NP in drinking and surface waters in India. 
• European Union and countries like the US, Japan and China have already acknowledged the dangers of this chemical.

• Derecho Storm

A storm system hit 3 states in  America Nebraska, Minnesota and Illinois called a derecho. 

As the storm rolled in, winds gushed at around 140 km per hour, turning the skies green.

What is a derecho?

• A derecho is a widespread, long-lived, straight-line windstorm associated with a “band of rapidly moving showers or thunderstorms”.
• Derechos or straight-line storms are those in which thunderstorm winds have no rotation, unlike a tornado or hurricane.
• They have wind gusts of at least 93 km per hour, a wind damage swath extending more than 400 km.
• Being a warm-weather phenomenon, a derecho generally – not always – occurs during summertime beginning in May, with most hitting in June and July.

How did it turn the US skies green?

• Severe thunderstorms result in a ‘green sky’ due to light interacting with the huge amount of water they hold.
• The big raindrops and hail scatter away all but the blue wavelengths, due to which primarily blue light penetrates below the storm cloud.
• The report said that this blue combines with the red-yellow of the afternoon or the evening sun to produce green.

• Gaganyaan abort mission this year: Solar and lunar missions in 2023 

ISRO has set new deadlines for major missions, with its first solar mission and third lunar mission set to take place in the first quarter of next year. 

About ‘Abort Mission’ of Gaganyaan:

• The ‘Abort Missions’ are meant to test the systems that can help the crew escape from the spacecraft mid-flight in case of failure.
• For the abort missions, the space agency has developed test vehicles that can send the systems up to a certain height, simulate a failure, and then check the escape system. 
• ISRO will send humanoid Vyommitra in unmanned Gaganyaan spacecraft ahead of human spaceflight (Monitoring module parameters).

• The Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) Rules

Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has notified amendment to the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) Rules, exempting highway projects of strategic and defence importance, which are 100 km from the Line of Control, among other locations, from an environmental clearance before construction.

About Environment Impact Assessment (EIA):

• The EIA is a process of evaluating the likely environmental impacts of a proposed project or development. 
• There are 39 categories of projects in India for which the environment clearance process is available.

Reason for the amendment:

• This amendment does away with the need for green clearance for the construction of the controversial Char Dham project, which includes widening of 899 km roads in ecologically sensitive areas of Uttarakhand to improve connectivity to Kedarnath, Badrinath, Yamunotri, and Gangotri shrines.
• The government deems it necessary to exempt such projects from the requirement of Environmental Clearance in border areas.

What is Kala-azar?

Black fever, often known as Kala-azar, is medically referred to as visceral leishmaniasis (VL). It is a sophisticated protozoan parasitic illness brought on by the parasite Leishmania donovani. The vector for its transmission is the sandfly Phlebotomine argentipus.

What are the causes of Kala-Azar?

Malnutrition, poor housing, and a weakened immune system are the main causes of the Kala-Azar sickness.

Symptoms of Kala-Azar

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Kala-azar patients can be identified by symptoms such as sporadic fever attacks, spleen and liver enlargement, weight loss, and anaemia.

• Ghana reports 1st suspected Marburg Virus case

Ghana has reported its first-ever suspected case of Marburg virus disease. It’s a highly infectious viral hemorrhagic fever (VHFs) with a fatality ratio of up to 88 per cent and belongs to the same family as Ebola.

Origin and cause of the virus:

• The Marburg virus disease was initially detected in 1967 after simultaneous outbreaks in Marburg and Frankfurt in Germany; and Belgrade, Serbia.
• In this, a severe illness in humans and non-human primates is caused by the two Marburg viruses: Marburg virus (MARV) and Ravn virus (RAVV).
• Fruit bats are the major carriers of the disease. 

Symptoms and Treatment:

• Human-to-human transmission occurs through direct contact with infected people’s blood, secretions, organs, or other bodily fluids. 
• High fever, severe headache, and severe malaise accompanied by muscle aches and pains are common symptoms of the disease.
• There are no specific vaccines or antiviral treatments to treat the disease. 
•  While the Ebola vaccine may potentially protect against a Marburg virus infection, clinical studies are yet to confirm this.

The McMahon line: A Century of Discord is a new book by Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, the governor of Himachal Pradesh.
