National Florence Nightingale Award-2021
Harinder Kaur, a nursing officer at the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital Chandigarh, was recently felicitated with the National Florence Nightingale Award 2021 by President Droupadi Murmu.
The award was conferred on as many as 51 nurses from across the country at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi.
Kaur joined GMSH-16 in Chandigarh in 2001, before which she had worked under the Punjab government since 1991. After joining GMSH-16, Kaur focused primarily on the welfare of pregnant women and newborns in the hospital.
About the award:
The awards are given to recognise the meritorious services rendered by nurses and nursing professionals to society.
It was instituted in 1973 by the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry.
Who Is Florence Nightingale?
Florence Nightingale, known as “the Lady with the Lamp” (born 12th May 1820, in Florence, Italy—died 13th August 1910, in London, England), was a British nurse, statistician, and social reformer, who was the foundational philosopher of modern nursing.
Nightingale was put in charge of nursing British and allied soldiers in Turkey during the Crimean War.
She spent many hours in the wards, and her night rounds giving personal care to the wounded established her image as the “Lady with the Lamp”.

Middle-East Green Initiative Summit 2022

What Is the Middle East Green Initiative?
The Middle East Green Initiative (MGI) summit is a Saudi Arabia-led initiative to drive unified climate action.
Broader Objectives:
Under it, Saudi Arabia will work with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and regional partners to plant an additional 40 billion trees in the West Asian region to reduce 2.5 per cent of global carbon levels.
Saudi Arabia has been sharing its expertise and know-how with its neighbouring countries to reduce carbon emissions resulting from hydrocarbon production in the region by 60 per cent and globally by 10 per cent.
Under it, the annual summit will host leaders from the government, scientists and environmentalists to discuss the details of implementation.

PM Unveils Logo, Theme and Website of India’s G20 Presidency
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently unveiled the logo, theme and website of India’s G20 Presidency. India will assume the G20 Presidency on December 1, 2022.
India will assume the presidency of the grouping of the world’s 20 largest economies for one year starting 1 December this year, following the G20 Summit hosted by Indonesia in Bali this year during 15-16 November.
Logo Explanation:
The G20 logo draws inspiration from the vibrant colours of India’s national flag – saffron, white and green, and blue.
It juxtaposes planet Earth with the lotus, India’s national flower that reflects growth amid challenges.
The Earth reflects India’s pro-planet approach to life, one in perfect harmony with nature. Below the G20 logo is “Bharat”, written in the Devanagari script.
Theme Explanation:
The theme of India’s G20 Presidency – “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” or “One Earth, One Family, One Future” – is drawn from the ancient Sanskrit text of the Maha Upanishad.

India’s First Private Sector Rocket Vikram-S
India’s first privately developed rocket – Vikram-S – is set for a launch between November 12 and 16, Hyderabad-based space startup Skyroot Aerospace announced recently.
The maiden mission of Skyroot Aerospace, named ‘Prarambh’ (the beginning), will carry three customer payloads and is set for launch from the Indian Space Research Organisation’s launchpad at Sriharikota.
What Is the Vikram-S Rocket?
The Vikram-S rocket is a single-stage sub-orbital launch vehicle that would carry three customer payloads and help test and validate most of the technologies in the Vikram series of space launch vehicles.
Skyroot has been developing three variants of the Vikram rocket.
While the Vikram-I can carry 480 kilograms of payload to Low Earth Orbit, the Vikram-II is equipped to lift off with 595 kilograms of cargo.

Mother Tongue Survey of India
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has completed the Mother Tongue Survey of India (MTSI) with field videography of the country’s 576 languages.
According to the annual report of the home ministry for 2021-22, it has been planned to set up a web archive at the National Informatics Centre (NIC) to preserve and analyse the original flavour of each indigenous mother tongue.
What Is the MTSI?
According to the report, the Mother Tongue Survey of India is a project that “surveys the mother tongues, which are returned consistently across two and more Census decades”. It also documents the linguistic features of the selected languages.
Where Does the Mother Tongue Feature in the Education of Children?
The new National Curriculum Framework (NCF) for the foundational stages of education, launched by Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan last month, has recommended that the mother tongue should be the primary medium of instruction in schools for children up to eight years of age.
Facts:
As per an analysis of 2011 linguistic census data in 2018, more than 19,500 languages or dialects are spoken in India as mother tongues.
According to the 2011 linguistic census, Hindi is the most widely spoken mother tongue, with 52.8 crore people or 43.6 per cent of the population, declaring it as the mother tongue.
The next highest is Bengali, the mother tongue of 9.7 crore individuals, accounting for 8 per cent of the population.

Ex-CJ Awasthi Appointed as Law Commission Chief
The Central Government recently appointed Justice Rituraj Awasthi, Retired High Court Chief Justice of Karnataka as chairperson along with five other members for the 22nd Law Commission.
The appointment comes more than two years after the Law Commission was notified on 24 February 2020. The Law Commission is constituted for three years.
About Justice Rituraj Awasthi:
Justice Rituraj Awasthi served as Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court from 11 October 2021 to 2 July 2022.
From 13 April 2009, he worked as Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court until 10 October 2021.
Prior to that, Justice Awasthi served on the Allahabad High Court’s Lucknow bench, where he practised Civil, Service and Educational Affairs.
Justice Rituraj Awasthi also served as an Assistant Solicitor General of India at Lucknow before his elevation.
About the 22nd Law Commission?
The Central Government is likely aiming at reviving the Indian Law Commission, by appointing a new chairman and five-panel members.

MNRE Notifies National Bio Energy Programme
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India, has recently notified the National Bioenergy Programme.
MNRE has continued the National Bioenergy Programme for the period from FY 2021-22 to 2025-26.
The programme has been recommended for implementation in two phases.
The Phase-I of the programme has been approved with a budget outlay of ₹858 crores.
The National Bioenergy Programme Will comprise the Following Sub-schemes:
Waste to Energy Programme (Programme on Energy from Urban, Industrial and Agricultural Wastes/Residues) to support the setting up of large Biogas, BioCNG and Power plants (excluding MSW to Power projects).
Biomass Programme (Scheme to support the manufacturing of Briquettes and Pellets and promotion of Biomass (non-bagasse) based cogeneration in industries) to support setting up of pellets and briquettes for use in power generation and non-bagasse based power generation projects.
Biogas Programme to support setting up of family and medium size Biogas in rural areas.
