National Press Day 2022
National Press Day is observed on 16th November every year to acknowledge and honour the Press Council of India (PCI).
The day marks the presence of an independent and responsible press in the country.
The Press Council of India also examines the quality of reportage of the Indian press and keeps a check on journalistic activities.

In 1966 on 16th November, the PCI was formed. The National Press Day of India is since then celebrated on 16th November every year to commemorate the establishment of the council.
Significance:
The council is extremely important to India as it was inherently constructed to protect the fourth pillar of a democracy, that is, the press.
Hence, it works consistently to ensure that the credibility of journalism is not compromised.

About East Timor:
Timor-Leste, or East Timor, a Southeast Asian nation occupying half the island of Timor, is ringed by coral reefs teeming with marine life.
Landmarks in the capital, Dili, speak to the country’s struggles for independence from Portugal in 1975 and then Indonesia in 2002.
The iconic 27m-tall Cristo Rei de Dili statue sits on a hilltop high over the city, with sweeping views of the surrounding bay.

Google’s 1,000 Language AI Model
Google is developing a model that can support the 1,000 most spoken languages of the world. The company revealed this at its AI event this month.
To investigate the potential of such a vast project, Google is also working on an AI language model which can support around 400 languages.
The company claimed this model had the “largest language coverage” among existing speech models.
What Is the Purpose of the New Language Model?
Google doesn’t have a specific use case for the language model.
However, according to a report by The Verge, a tech outlet, the end goal is to enable Google users to experience better searches, more accurate auto-generated captions, natural online translation, and faster calculations.
The project is under development, and researchers are now collecting linguistic data to train the model.
How Is This Initiative Different from Google’s Other Models?
While many other existing AI language models are deployed for business or research, Google’s 1,000 languages initiative aims to improve AI language models as a whole for diverse use cases.
Google plans to build one gigantic model for the 1,000 languages so that both widely used and rarer languages can co-exist, interact, and grow together.
What are AI Language Models Used for?
Through AI language models, companies aim to automate manual processes, generate new insights based on existing data, and reduce reliance on human labour in fields like translation, customer service, or computation.
Today, website chatbots help us 24×7, services like Google Translate instantly decode foreign languages, and AI-based art generators help non-artists create prize-winning digital paintings while the same technology also powers price predictors for investors.
Question:
Which company is developing an Artificial Intelligence model that can support the 1,000 most spoken languages of the world?
A. Facebook
B. Google
C. Oracle
D. Yahoo

Britain, France Deal to Stop Illegal Migrants
Britain and France recently signed an agreement worth $74.5 million (72.2 million euros) to step up their efforts to stop illegal migrants from channel crossings.
The multi-year agreement calls for a 40% increase in the number of French officers patrolling French beaches with British funding over the following five months.
Key Features of the Agreement:
The agreement, worth $74.5 million (72.2 million euros), aims to stop migrants from crossing the channel to England in small boats.
It calls for a 40 per cent increase in the number of French officers patrolling the French beaches in 2022-23 with British funding over the next 5 months.
This comes after more than 40,000 people crossed the British Channel in 2022. In 2021, the number of immigrants via the channel was just 28,526. Most of these migrants are from Albania, Iran and Afghanistan.
Both countries have committed to using technological and human resources on the French coast to improve the detection, monitoring and interception of migrant boats.
These resources will be used to collect information from the intercepted migrants. The collected information will then be used to dismantle smuggling networks and curb illegal crossings.
For the first time, teams of observers will be stationed on both sides of the Channel to improve the common understanding of migration and exchanges of information.
Question:
Which two European countries recently signed an agreement worth $74.5 million to stop illegal migrants from channel crossings?
A. Germany-Britain
B. France-Britain
C. Spain- Italy

Global Methane Detection System
The United Nations recently announced a high-tech, satellite-based global methane detection system to alert the government and private agencies against emissions.
Launched during the ongoing COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh, Italy, the Methane Alert and Response System (MARS) can be a vital tool to help precisely locate major methane leaks.
What Is MARS and How Will It Help to Curb Global Warming?
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) says, “MARS is a data-to-action platform set up as part of the UNEP International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) strategy to get policy-relevant data into the right hands for emissions mitigation”.
MARS will be the first publicly available global satellite system to identify major emission events, alert stakeholders, and support and track mitigation progress.
The new system will provide technical or advisory services to help assess mitigation options.
It will help in the early detection of methane leaks, making it possible to respond faster.
Why Target Only Methane-Related Emissions?
Methane, a by-product of decomposing organic matter and the main component of natural gas used in power plants, contributes just a small portion of all greenhouse gas emissions brought on by humans, but it has an 80 times greater heat-trapping capacity per unit of mass than carbon dioxide.
According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, we need to reduce methane emissions by at least 30% by 2030 to keep the target of limiting global warming to 1.5°C within reach.
Question:
The UN recently announced a high-tech, satellite-based global detection system to alert the government and private agencies against the emissions of which Gas?
A. Carbon dioxide
B. Aerosoles
C. Methane
D. Nitrous oxide
