Welcome to the world of numbers and equations, the Mathematical Olympiad Programme in India — an exciting adventure for our math enthusiasts.
Mathematical Olympiad Programme is organised by Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) on behalf of the National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India.
This program is a significant initiative by the NBHM, primarily aimed at identifying mathematical talent among pre-university students in the country.
For training and selection purposes, several regions across the country have been designated, each assigned a Regional Coordinator.
Additionally, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNV) and Kendriya Vidyalayas (KV) are treated as separate regions, each with a ‘Regional Coordinator.’
The first stage is the Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics (IOQM), previously known as PRMO. It’s a three-hour examination with 30 questions. The answers are single or two-digit numbers marked on a machine-readable OMR response sheet. The IOQM question paper is available in English and Hindi.

The second stage is the Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO), a three-hour examination with six problems. RMOs are conducted in English, Hindi, and other regional languages as deemed appropriate. The problems involve a high level of difficulty and sophistication.
The best-performing students from the RMO move to the third stage, the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO), held on the third Sunday of January nationwide.
Top students from the INMO (approximately 65) enter the fourth stage, the International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp (IMOTC), held at HBCSE or another institute in India from April to May.
This camp emphasises conceptual foundations and problem-solving skills. Selection tests during this camp determine the six students representing India at the IMO. Resource persons from various institutions across the country are invited.
The selected team undergoes an 8-10 day rigorous training program at HBCSE before departing for the IMO.
The Olympiad program concludes with students’ participation in the IMO, accompanied by four teachers or mentors. This comprehensive journey from IOQM to IMO is not just about examinations but a transformative process that hones mathematical talent and problem-solving skills.
