Maths Olympiad Stages
The Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) directs these exams. Students who score excellently in these exams will get an opportunity to appear in the International Mathematics Olympiad- the last and final stage of the program. These exams are divided into different stages as stated below:
Stage 1: Pre-Regional Mathematical Olympiad
The PRMO is the first stage of the program. Students will get a complete insight into the course curriculum and structure of the program.
Stage 2: Regional Mathematical Olympiad
The RMO exams are held for 3 hours dealing with six major areas. The exams are conducted in various languages- English and Hindi. It may also be conducted in the respective state’s regional languages.
Stage 3: Indian National Mathematical Olympiad
Students who excel in the first two stages get the chance to appear in the 3rd stage. Approximately, 900 students every year are chosen to appear for the INMO exams.
Stage 4: International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp
The 35 top performers of the INMO exams are invited by HBCSE to participate in the IMOTC. During their stay at the camp, the students will be examined as per their merit on different tests. Finally, only the top 6 performers will move to the next stage.
Stage 5: Pre-departure Camp
The top performing students are examined and trained before they move ahead for their International Mathematics Olympiad.
Stage 6: International Mathematical Olympiad
The top 6 performing students will get the opportunity to represent India at the International Mathematical Olympiad.
