Exam Brief

The “Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana” (KVPY) is a program launched by the Indian government’s Department of Science and Technology (DST) in 1999 to encourage students studying Basic Science to pursue careers in scientific research. The program’s purpose is to identify and encourage exceptional and motivated students to pursue careers in research.

This program aims to assist students in realising their potential and ensuring that the most talented are groomed for research and development. Generous fellowship and contingency grants are provided to the selected KVPY Fellows up to the pre PhD level or 5 years earlier. Summer programmes for the KVPY Fellows are also held at major research and educational institutions across the country

The Department of Science and Technology, the government’s nodal agency, has given the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, the overall responsibility of organising and running the KVPY program and has established a Management Committee and a National Advisory Committee (NAC) to oversee its implementation. The KVPY Program’s day-to-day operations and academic aspects are overseen by a core group.

Learn KVPY Aptitude Test – Stream SA Exam Concepts

Selection Process

There are two stages of examination to avail the KVPY fellowship. The first stage is the Aptitude Test. Candidates can take the test in two languages – English and Hindi. Those who get the minimum cut-off marks in the written test are called for the second stage, which is the Interview. To be eligible for the scholarship, candidates must pass both stages. For all three streams, the KVPY Aptitude Test is required.

Note: For 2023, the KVPY fellowship was awarded solely based on the Aptitude test without Interviews as a one-time measure.

Stages of Exam

There are two stages of the exam, namely:

• Aptitude Test
• Personal Interview

Exam pattern details - Scoring pattern (+/- Marking)

1. The question paper is of 160 marks.
2. There are 80 questions in Part I and 40 questions in Part II. The total number of questions that students must attempt is 80.

– KVPY Marks Distribution – Students must attempt any 3 sections from Part 1 (20 x 3 = 60 marks) and any 2 sections from Part 2 = (20 x 2 = 40).

– KVPY Marking Scheme – In Part I of SB/SX Stream, one mark will be awarded for every correct response, and 0.25 marks will be deducted for every incorrect response. In Part II of Stream SB/ SX, two marks will be awarded for each correct response, and 0.5 marks will be deducted for every wrong answer.

Important Points

1. Aspiring candidates have to attempt Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology questions within 3 hours for the KVPY SX exam.
2. The KVPY exam for the S.X. stream will be conducted from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
3. The KVPY questions papers will be available in both English and Hindi.
4. The question type will be objective-based.

Preparation Tips

The KVPY 2023 exam date will be announced soon. The final minutes before the exam are critical and must be used wisely. Keeping this in mind, we’ve compiled a list of KVPY last-minute recommendations to assist you in passing the exam and receiving a decent grade.

1. Work on Your Weak Points: During this time, you should concentrate on your weak areas, which are the chapters and ideas which you are having trouble with, particularly those that are critical for the exam. It’s necessary to work on your weak areas, but don’t put too much pressure on yourself. 

2. Don’t Pick New Topics: One of the most critical last-minute KVPY advice is to avoid touching or selecting any new subject, as new topics will take longer to complete. Even if you spend time studying the subject, you still won’t be able to comprehend it completely. Instead, revise and master the topics that you have already completed.

5. Use Flowcharts And Flashcards for Revision: It is not practical to go over all the chapters for last-minute revision. Instead, review your notes, flowcharts, and flashcards. It will save a significant amount of time. Additionally, this method will also lead to improved memorization.

Stay Positive- You must remain confident and concentrated in order to translate your knowledge into exam marks. Allow no negative to stand in the way of achieving your goal.

Exam Taking Strategy

• When it comes to getting good grades, time management is crucial. Manage your time so that each subject receives the same amount of attention.
• Give the subjects in which you are weak extra attention. The time management rule also applies throughout the examination.
• To begin with, solve the section of the question paper that you are the most familiar with. What you have to study at the +2 level is vastly different from what you studied previously. Also, spend some time researching the fellowship’s potential. You must understand why you desire it.
• Make it a habit to schedule at least two 2-hour sessions each day for KVPY preparation.
• One slot should be dedicated to Physics and Maths, while the other should be dedicated to Chemistry and Biology.
• If you’re a PCM student, make biology a priority. You’ll get a lot of points for it.
• If you’re a PCB student, start polishing your concepts from the 9th and 10th grades.
• From the 11th grade onwards, do some Algebra and Trigonometry. Try to do straight lines and circles from co-ordinate Geometry.
• Solve previous years’ papers. On the KVPY website, you can take practice tests.
• You must become acquainted with the buttons and a calculator.
• Get to know the feature of marking questions as well. Experimenting in the exam hall is not a good idea. Take a photo of your hall ticket and print it.
• Remember, you should reach at least 1.5 hours before the exam starts. For the stay and travel, you should rely on a guardian. That’s the best thing to do instead of wasting your study time.
• KVPY is less demanding than JEE or NEET. It puts a lot of interconnected concepts to the test. JEE questions mostly assess problem-solving abilities, whereas NEET assesses speed and memory. So simply preparing for these will not suffice. Although the questions are similar, the technique is not. Be familiar with KVPY’s question pattern and practice time management.

→ Biology (Either you know or you don’t. Great time saver) >

→ Chemistry (Direct questions from concepts. Some questions have calculations and some reactions require some time) >

→ Maths (You can always try option matching if you can’t solve)>

→ Physics (Best section to test your concepts. Give ample time to each problem. They often have small twists which is going to consume the time you had saved from the other three)

→ Physics: Because Physics is a subject that necessitates logical reasoning, you must fully comprehend all of the essential principles. Always double-check that your main principles are understood. You can solve any difficulty if you have a thorough comprehension of the ideas.

Furthermore, because Physics and Mathematics are intertwined, you must be able to utilise mathematical formulas to solve Physics problems. As many conceptual issues as possible should be practised. Theoretical Physics-related problems are commonly asked in KVPY. As a result, make sure you thoroughly prepare for those questions.

→ Mathematics: To gain confidence in the subject, solve as many mathematical questions as you can. Mathematics is incomplete without formulas. As a result, you must have all of the key formulas on the tip of your fingers. Theorems and findings are important in addition to formulas.

Let us hear from Rishit Shrivastava, the topper of the KVPY-Stream SX 2020 exam, about her experience.

Q. Tell us about yourself, your school, your education, and so on.
A. I am a student of DDPS in Kota, and I am now studying for the JEE Advanced exam.

Q. Congratulations on your KVPY 2020 exam performance! What was your reaction when you found out?
A. Thank you so much; I was extremely pleased with the result. I was hoping for a top-ten ranking.

Q. How long have you known about the KVPY exam?
A. I’ve known about it since I was in elementary school because it’s a prestigious exam. In Class 11, I took the KVPY test for the first time and received an AIR of 27.

Q. Tell us about your daily routine and exam preparation approach for KVPY.
A. My regular routine involves attending morning classes. Following that, I study for the board and the JEE exam. I also play badminton on a daily basis. If someone is already studying for the JEE Advanced, KVPY, in my opinion, does not require any further preparation. I concentrated more on concepts and answered problems of greater difficulty in JEE Advanced, as well as National and International Olympiads.

Q. How has the COVID-19 pandemic influenced your planning?
A. It had no significant impact on my preparation because my online lessons and regular tests began in April.

Q. Did you prepare for the KVPY test by practising previous year papers and practice papers?
A. Before taking the KVPY exam, I solved a few previous year sample papers.

Q. In your opinion, which subjects in KVPY 2020 were the easiest and the most difficult?
A. Mathematics, in my opinion, was the most difficult subject, while Chemistry was the easiest.

Q. What are your long-term objectives?
A. Right now, my goal is to get into the top 20 in the JEE Advanced exam and study Computer Science at IIT Bombay.

Q. Have you taken or plan to take any admission exams?
A. Yes, I took the JEE Main exam and will take the JEE Advanced exam in July 2023.

Q. Do you have any advice or message for future KVPY candidates?
A. Put more emphasis on concept development.

Harshil Vagadia, a citizen of Rajkot, Gujarat, secured an All India Rank (AIR) of 3. He is from the General Category and debuted in the SX Stream. We’ve learnt from KVPY topper Harshil Vagadia that students must have conceptual clarity rather than memorising the KVPY syllabus in an interview.

He discusses his exam preparation tactics and the importance of time management. He also stated that the previous years’ questions are the most important weapon for success. In this KVPY topper interview, Harshil claims that cracking the KVPY test is not difficult if one is already studying for JEE or AIIMS because the syllabus is nearly identical.

Q. Congratulations on being the KVPY 2018 topper! How are you feeling?
A. I am ecstatic that I received such a high score in KVPY. It’s encouraging to realise that all of your hard work has paid off.

Q. Tell us about yourself.
A. My hometown is Rajkot, Gujarat. I spent two years in Kota, where I was studying for the JEE exam. This year, I finished my 12th grade. I enjoy computer programming in addition to my schooling. I enjoy reading novels as well. My father owns a business, while my mother works in the education sector.

Q. How did you become aware of KVPY?
A. I learned about KVPY from student conversations. I learned that it was a nationwide exam, so I decided to take it. I appeared for KVPY in both 11th and 12th grade.

Q. When did you start your KVPY preparation? Did you join any coaching institutes?
A. I did not explicitly prepare for KVPY. I continued my JEE preparation and gave the KVPY exam along the

Q. Did you practice the previous years’ KVPY exam papers? How did that help you?
A. I solved the question papers of the past 3 years for practice. They helped me tremendously as they gave me an idea about exam patterns and time management.

Q. What was your exam day strategy? How did you prepare for it on a daily basis?
A. I decided to attempt section 1 first and then section 2. I attempted PCM in section 1 and PC in section 2. The number of questions is more so one needs to be fast and accurate. Also, the computers can be slow during online exams so one needs to be prepared for that. The best way to practice this is to solve the past years’ papers.

Q. Tell us about your interview experience. What was the total number of people on the panel? What kinds of questions did they ask?
A. The interview panel generally consists of 7-8 members. They asked conceptual questions which usually don’t involve much calculation. The topics were the ones I had written in the self-appraisal form. All the subjects were given equal weightage. The interview lasted for 20 minutes. All the questions were academic and no personal questions were asked.

Q. Share some KVPY exam preparation tips for future aspirants?
A. In KVPY, a lot of conceptual questions are asked so students must practice them instead of rote learning. During the KVPY interview, it is important to be confident. Major weightage is given to the aptitude test, so students must focus on that. Best of luck to all future KVPY aspirants.

Kartikey Gupta, topper of 2018

In an interview with KVPY topper Kartikey Gupta, we learnt that the NCERT curriculum was very important for the KVPY exam preparation. Under the SX category, Kartikey received 93.75 points in the stage 1 theory exam and 76 points in the stage 2 interview. Kartikey’s achievement was aided by his unwavering commitment and guidance from his parents and professors.

Jayesh Singla topper of 2018

Jayesh Singla, a Patiala native, was placed 10th overall in the KVPY 2018 test in the SX stream. His parents are physicians, but he wants to work in the field of computer science. Jayesh believes that self-study and coaching are both essential for passing the KVPY exam. He is an 18-year-old student who graduated from Apollo Public School.

Proper time management and previous year exam papers are his success mantras. Jayesh took the KVPY exams in both the tenth and eleventh grades, achieving AIR 44 and AIR 10, respectively. In both the theory and the interview, he received a score of 85.

Application Form Filling - Start & End Date

To successfully complete and submit the KVPY application form 2023, follow the steps outlined below:

Step 1: Go to http://kvpy.iisc.ac.in/main/applications.htm to register for the KVPY 2023 program.

Step 2: On the homepage on the right side, click on the ‘Applicant Login’ option. The page titled “GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR KVPY APTITUDE TEST 2023” will be shown. At the bottom of the page, click on the ‘Login’ tab.

Step 3: This is the KVPY 2023 Login Window. To begin, successfully register yourself by filling in the relevant information.

Step 4: Enter your User ID and Password to log in. On your screen, the necessary KVPY application form 2023 will appear.

Step 5: Fill in your personal and academic details, choose the test centre and upload your photo, signature and other certificates, as applicable.

Step 6: Pay the application fees and successfully submit the KVPY 2023 application form.

Age Criteria

The candidates who apply for the KVPY Aptitude Test – Stream SX exam must be 18 years old.

Education Qualification

↳ Students enrolled in the XII Standard (Science courses) during the academic year 2023–24 who plan to enrol in undergraduate Basic Sciences programmes (B.Sc./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./Int. M.S) during the academic year 2023–24.

Number of Attempts

To maximise the number of chances of being selected for IISc and IISERs, it is recommended that you take KVPY twice, once in class 11 and once in class 12. You can take the KVPY SX stream if you are taking a Basic Science course after class 12.
