Q.1. What was the effect of the forest management during the colonial times on the shifting cultivators?
Ans: Shifting cultivation was a traditional agricultural practice that was followed in many parts of Africa, Asia and South America. Forests were cut and burnt in rotation.
After the monsoon showers, the seeds were sown in the ashes, and after that crops were cultivated. This is how cultivation was continued for a couple of years.
Then the forest area was left to grow for years. They were then cut and burnt again. The process was repeated a few years later. This type of agriculture was known as shifting cultivation.
The colonial government banned the practice of shifting cultivation as they thought that it would harm the forest and also valuable timber would be lost. The shifting cultivation made it difficult for the colonial government to calculate taxes.
Many of the shifting cultivators protested against the colonial government and were forced to change their occupation and also displaced.
Q.2: How did the changes in forest management in the colonial period affect the nomadic and pastoralist communities?
Ans: Nomadic and pastoralist communities migrated to the mountains and deserts and in the plains and plateaus of India and Africa. The pastoralist communities formed a significant part of the population in both countries during the Colonial era. The pastoralist communities were affected in a major way when colonial rule was established. A lot of hardships were faced by the pastoralist communities when the colonial government decided to clear forests for expanding land for agricultural purposes. Thus, the nomads lost grazing fields for their cattle.

In Europe, there was a great demand for these items. Furthermore, these plantations were marked as restricted areas and no one was allowed to enter inside these plantations.
Q.4: Discuss the effect of shipbuilding on the declining forest cover of the Indian subcontinent.
Ans: In the early century, the disappearance of oak forests in England had created a problem of timber supply from the Royal Navy. It was impossible to build ships without strong and durable timber.
