Class 11 Maths Chapter 11: Points to Remember

Some of the important points to be remembered from Class 11 Maths ‘Conic Sections’ chapter have been provided below:

  • Introduction of Conic Section: A conic section or conic is the locus of a point PP which moves in such a way that its distance from a fixed point SS always bears a constant ratio to its distance from a fixed line, all being in the same plane.
  • Focus: The fixed point is called the focus of the conic section.
  • Directrix: The fixed straight line is called the directrix of the conic section.
  • Eccentricity: The constant ratio is called the eccentricity of the conic section and is denoted by e.
  • Axis: The straight line passing through the focus and perpendicular to the directrix is called the axis of the conic section.
  • Vertex: The points of intersection of the conic section and the axis are called vertices of the conic section.
  • Centre: The point which bisects every chord of the conic passing through it is called the centre of the conic.
  • Latus-Rectum: The latus-rectum of a conic is the chord passing through the focus and perpendicular to the axis.
  • A circle is the set of all points in a plane that are equidistant from a fixed point in the plane. The fixed point is called the centre of the circle, and the distance from the centre to a point on the circle is called the radius of the circle.
  • Parabola: A parabola is the locus of a point which moves in a plane such that its distance from a fixed point in the plane is always equal to its distance from a fixed straight line in the same plane.
  • Hyperbola: A hyperbola is the locus of a point in a plane which moves in such a way that the ratio of its distance from a fixed point (called the focus) in the same plane to its distance from a fixed line (called directrix) is always constant which is always greater than unity.

FAQs on NCERT Solutions for Class 11 Maths Exercise 11.1

Q.1: How many questions are there in Exercise 11.1, Class 11?
Ans: There are a total of 15 questions in the Conic Sections Exercise of Class 11 Maths. Practicing all the answers to these 15 questions increases the scope of gaining good marks in the Class 11 Maths exam.

Q.2: How many long and short answer questions are there in the Exercise 1 of Conic Sections Class 11
Ans: There are a total of 11 short answer questions and 4 long answer questions in Exercise 11.1 of Class 11 Maths

Q.3: Where can I find NCERT solutions for all problems of Class 11 Maths Chapter 11?
Ans: Students can find NCERT solutions for Class 11 Maths Chapter 11 on this page of Embibe.

Q.4: Find the equation of the circle with centre 0,2 and radius 2.
Ans: We know that the equation of a circle is given as x-h2+y-k2=r2 where h,k is the centre of the circle, and r is the radius of the circle.

Given: centre h,k=0,2 and radius r=2
Therefore, the equation of the given circle can be written as x-02+y-22=22 ⇒x2+y2+4-4y=4
Therefore, x2+y2-4y=0

Q.5: Find the centre and radius of the circle x2+y2-8x+10y-12=0
Ans: The equation of the given circle is x2+y2-8x+10y-12=0

x2+y2-8x+10y-12=0⇒x2-8x+y2+10y=12⇒x2-2(x)(4)+42+y2+2(y)(5)+52-16-25=12⇒(x-4)2+(y+5)2=53⇒(x-4)2+{y-(-5)}2=(53)2, which is of the form (x-h)2+(y-k)2=r2, where h=4, k=-5, and r=53 Thus, the centre of the given circle is (4,-5), while its radius is 53.
