Probability is a branch of Mathematics that deals with the likelihood of an event to occur. The Probability of occurring an event in numbers is from 0 to 1. If the event is impossible to occur, then that event is counted as 0; on the other hand, if the likelihood of an event is 100 per cent possible, that event is counted as 1. The higher the probability, the more likely the event will occur. For example, if we toss a coin, the probability of getting any of the sides is 50 per cent. The probability of getting a “head” or a “tail” is equal.
Probability is widely used in various areas of Science such as Statistics, Mathematics, Finance, Artificial Intelligence etc. It is of four types:
Classical Probability: It is the probability that is based on theories like something will happen. The best example of classical probability or theoretical probability is a toss of a coin. The probability of getting a head or a tail is ½.
Empirical Probability: It is also known as an experimental probability in which an experiment will give a certain result. An example of empirical probability is when you toss a coin many times, the number of heads or the tail you get is what we know as an experiential probability.
Subjective Probability: When there is an opinion involved in the event then it is known as subjective probability. There is no formal reasoning involved in this probability.
Axiomatic Probability: It is just another way of describing the possibility of an event. In this, some of the elements are predefined to make the calculations easy for the calculation of an event to occur.
Probability plays an important role in scoring good marks in the exam for Class 9 Maths. Some of the terms related to probability are.
Probability is all about occurring in an event after a specific number of intervals. There are formulas to calculate the probability of an event occurring. Some of the formulas related to Probability are:
Probability Range |
0 ≤ P(A) ≤ 1 |
Rule of Addition |
P(A∪B) = P(A) + P(B) – P(A∩B) |
Rule of Complementary Events |
P(A’) + P(A) = 1 |
Disjoint Events |
P(A∩B) = 0 |
Independent Events |
P(A∩B) = P(A) ⋅ P(B) |
Conditional Probability |
P(A | B) = P(A∩B) / P(B) |
Bayes Formula |
P(A | B) = P(B | A) ⋅ P(A) / P(B) |
