The National Entrance Screening Test (NEST) exam is conducted by the National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) authorities in conjunction with Mumbai University – Department of Atomic Energy Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences (UM-DAE CEBS), Mumbai. NEST 2023 Eligibility Criteria
Candidates who want to appear in the National Entrance Screening Test (NEST) must meet the NEST 2023 eligibility criteria set by NISER Bhubaneswar and UM-DAE CEBS.
Candidates who qualify for the NEST and match the NEST eligibility criteria are offered admission to five-year integrated MSc programs by NISER Bhubaneswar and UM-DAE CEBS. The NEST 2023 eligibility criteria are given below:
- Qualifying Exam: Candidates must have qualified Class 12th exam from the Science stream or appear in the class 12th exam from a recognised board by the Indian government. Furthermore, candidates must have passed Class 12th in 2022/23 or will appear for the exam in 2023.
- Lower Age Limit: The lower age limit set by the authorities differs for candidates as per their category. Candidates from the General and OBC categories must have been born on or after August 1, 2003. Candidates from SC/ST/PwD category must have been born on or after August 1, 1997.
- Qualifying Exam Marks: Candidates from the General category must have a minimum aggregate of 60% in the Class 12th examination, whereas candidates from reserved categories such as SC/ST/PwD only need to score 55% aggregate in Class 12th.

The application form for NEST 2023 has to be filled out online. Candidates must be careful while filling out the NEST online application form and ensure everything runs smoothly while uploading the details. To fill out the NEST 2023 application form, candidates can follow the steps below:
- 1st Step: Visit the official website of NEST, i.e., nestexam.in.
- 2nd Step: Click on the link that reads the “Online Application” tab.
- 3rd Step: Now, candidates can fill in their personal and contact details to complete the registration process.
- 4th Step: Click on the “Register” button.
- 5th Step: Candidates will receive a registration ID on their registered mobile number or e-mail.
- 6th Step: Fill in the NEST application form by providing educational details.
- 7th Step: Then, candidates must upload a passport-sized photograph and signature to be eligible to complete the online payment.
- 8th Step: Once the application form is filled, candidates must pay the application fees via net banking, debit card or credit card.
- 9th Step: Save and download the NEST application form for future reference.

The entrance exam will be conducted online for three and a half hours in two sessions (morning and evening). As per the latest NEST exam pattern notification, the question paper will contain four sections covering four subject-wise sections, including multiple-choice questions. - General: Significant figures, dimensional analysis, Units and dimensions, Methods of measurement (Direct, Indirect, Null), current and resistance. Design of some simple experiments. Interpretation of data and a graphical representation, Error analysis, and measurement errors.
- Mechanics: Kinematics in one and two dimensions (Cartesian coordinates only), projectiles. Newton’s laws of motion. Uniform circular motion. Kinetic and potential energy. Conservation of linear momentum, Work and power and mechanical energy. Centre of mass and its motion. Gravitational potential and field. Centripetal acceleration and centrifugal force. - Sound and mechanical waves: Longitudinal and transverse waves, Plane-wave motion, superposition of waves. Doppler effect. Progressive and stationary waves.
- Thermal Physics: Thermal expansion of solids, liquids and gases. Heat conduction in one dimension. Elementary concepts of convection and radiation. Equivalence of heat and work. The first and second laws of thermodynamics and their applications.
- Electricity and Magnetism: Electric field and potential. Coulomb’s law. Gauss’s law and its application in simple cases; The electrical potential energy of a system of point charges and dipoles in a uniform electrostatic field.
- Electromagnetic Induction: Lenz’s law, Faraday’s law, Self and mutual inductance, RC, LR and LC circuits with A.C sources.
- Optics: Reflection, Rectilinear propagation of light, refraction at plane and spherical surfaces, Deviation and dispersion of light by a prism.
- Modern Physics: Alpha, beta and gamma radiations. Atomic nucleus. Law of radioactive decay, Characteristic and continuous X–rays, Bohr’s theory of hydrogen-like atoms, Photoelectric effect, and Moseley’s law.
- Capacitance: Capacitors in series and parallel. Calculation of capacitance with and without dielectrics. Energy is stored in a capacitor.

NEST 2024 Preparation Tips

- 2nd Step: Click on the ‘Login’ option that appears on the screen. Enter the login details, such as the User ID and password.
