May 22, 2023Nutrients are vital for a healthy body. So what are nutrients? Nutrients are a substance that gives nourishment for the continuity of life and growth. They are needed by organisms for energy, development and reproduction. Nutrients are digested by the human body and later broken down into smaller parts. There are two types of nutrients- macronutrients and micronutrients. The main types of macronutrients are protein, fat, and carbohydrate. Minerals and Vitamins- calcium, iron and vitamin C- are the two types of micronutrients needed for regeneration as well as sustenance of the cells. Read this article to learn more.
Carbohydrates are a type of macronutrient and are important for the sustenance of cells. They are excellent sources of quick energy. A monosaccharide is the basic part of carbohydrates. A great example of a monosaccharide is sugar or glucose. Glucose can be on its own or can be united to form longer chains to convert it into starch. Starch can be seen in potatoes. Potatoes are very useful in carbohydrate loading as it is a quick fix for a great source of energy. Carbohydrates can be found in cereal, pasta, grains, potatoes, bread, soda, fruits, candy etc.
Protein is another important macronutrient useful in tissue building. It is highly recommended to individuals who are interested in building their muscles as muscle primarily consists of proteins. Proteins are created from amino acids in the form of tiny monomers. The body produces its own amino acids, however, there are nine more amino acids required for a body to function perfectly. These types of amino acids are called essential amino acids. The best source of food wherein they can be found in meat, fish, beans, and eggs.
Fats are another macronutrient which is lipids and are essential for energy storage within the human body. With hydrogen and carbon within them, they have a long chain which is of use in storing energy within the chemical bonds. So why do we need fats? Fats are needed to protect our organs, and cells for balanced hormone regulation within the body. Butter and oil are excellent sources of fats.
Micronutrients are required by the body for it to function properly. Any deficiency of it can lead to critical damage and cause life-threatening conditions. Micronutrients are responsible for several functions like producing hormones, enzymes and more for an individual’s development and growth. The deficiency of micronutrients can prove to have long-term effects on the human body. In low and middle-income countries, it is very common to find iodine, iron, and vitamin A deficiency, especially in pregnant women and children. Other symptoms of micronutrient deficiency can be seen in low energy levels, poor mental clarity, and overall functional capacity of the body. Direct impact can be seen in reduced quality of work, poor educational performance, and an increase in the risks of other health conditions.
