November 8, 2024RTO full form is Regional Transport Office. Whereas the full form of RTO in Hindi is known as क्षेत्रीय परिवहन कार्यालय in Hindi. This department comes under the Ministry of Transport and Highways and is entrusted with the job of providing driving licences, vehicle registration etc. RTO offices are present in nearly every region of the Indian states and Union Territories (UT). Apart from providing the service of vehicle registration and documentation, this department also maintains a database of vehicles and drivers. With the advancement of technology, RTO offices in a couple of cities have started providing digital driving licences too.
The RTO office of any district is headed by an RTO officer whose main responsibility is to maintain the fare of the public transport in his jurisdiction. They are also responsible for maintaining the safety of the transport within their area.
RTO office is the pioneer government agency whose job is to regulate transportation within a particular region. Their line of work is not limited to merely road transport but they also oversee the water, and air transportation too. An RTO officer has to make sure that the rules and regulations made for traffic are followed in his jurisdiction. The RTO office is open on weekdays from Monday to Saturday typically from 9 am to 5 pm every day.
RTOs are responsible for assigning the Public Service Vehicle (PSV) badge to each vehicle. This PSV comprises the relevant data such as the driver’s name and address, registration number, the validity of the driving licence, police verification status of the person etc. The RTO office maintains a directory of PSVs and updates them from time to time.
