The SSC Stenographer selection procedure involves three stages. The 1st stage is a computer-based test. The 2nd stage is a skill test and qualifying in nature. The 1st stage of the selection process is a computer-based examination (CBE). The SSC Stenographer CBE contains objective-type multiple-choice questions. The questions paper contains three parts or subjects, namely General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness, and English Language and Comprehension. Furthermore, the question paper contains 200 questions for 200 marks. The overall duration of the exam is two hours.
The Commission will normalise marks scored by candidates in the exam using the prescribed formula. Furthermore, the normalised marks will be used to determine the final merit and cutoff marks. SSC shortlists candidates for the skill test based on the marks candidates obtain in CBE.

The second stage of the SSC Stenographer selection is the skill test. Moreover, the skill test is mandatory but qualifying in nature. Candidates who clear the computer-based exam are qualified for the skill test.
The officials will give one dictation to candidates for 10 minutes in English or Hindi (as opted by candidates). Furthermore, the speed of dictation is 100 words per minute (wpm) for Stenographer Grade C and 80 wpm for Stenographer Grade D. Candidates have to transcribe the matter on the computer.
