Triangular Prism: Triangular prism is an interesting concept that is taught in class 9th of CBSE board. A triangular prism is a three-sided prism composed of two triangular bases and three rectangular sides. It is also called a polyhedron. A Triangular prism has 5 faces, 6 vertices and 9 edges. It’s edges and vertices are connected to each other. As per the nature of prism, the triangular bases are parallel and congruent to each other.
We have provided detailed information on triangular prism in this article. Read on to find out about its definition, formula and solved examples. The article also covers NCERT books, which will be helpful for students in their exam preparation. Triangular Prism: Definition
It is a three dimensional figure consisting of identical ends connected with parallel lines. We can say that it is a geometrical shape with three rectangular sides and two triangular bases. The triangular bases are parallel and congruent to each other. A Triangular prism is a pentahedron with nine distinct nets.
The triangular prism is composed of two-dimensional figures i.e., triangle and rectangle. Here, the bases are triangle whereas, lateral faces are rectangles. There are five faces, six edges and 6 vertices in triangular prism. The edges and vertices are connected with each other through rectangular bases. The angle between refracting surfaces and refracting edge is called as angle of prism. Apart from triangular prism, there are other types of prism such as rectangular, square and pentagonal prism.
Triangular Prism Properties
We have listed some of the important properties of Triangular Prism for the students to remember.
It has five faces
It has two triangle bases and three rectangular sides
It has nine edges
It has six vertices
The shape of the base is triangle
The shape of the sides is rectangle
The triangular bases are equilateral.
Triangular Prism Volume
The volume of triangular prism is the space occupied by the prism, which is nothing but the product of base and height of the prism.
Surface Area Of Triangular Prism
The triangular prism surface area is equal to the lateral surface and base area of the triangular prism.
Surface Area of Triangular Prism= 2 A+ PH
Where A is the area of triangular prism, P is perimeter and H is the height of the prism.
Triangular Prism Examples
Some of the examples of triangular prism are given below:
Example 1: Find the volume of the triangular prism with base is 4 cm, height is 8 cm, and length is 12 cm.
Solution: Volume of Triangular Prism = 1/2 × b × h × l
V = 1/2 × 4 × 8 × 12
V= 192
Therefore, the volume of triangular prism is 192 cm3
Example 2: If the height of the prism is 6cm and the length of the side of the equilateral triangular base is 12 cm. Then find the area of the prism?
Solutions: Given, Base = 4cm, height of the base= 8cm, length of the base=12cm, Height of the prism = 2cm
The perimeter of triangular prism is a = b = c = 6cm.
Area of the Triangular Prism = (bh + ( a + b + c)H)
Area = (4 × 8+(6+6+6)2)
=(32 + (18)2) = 32 + 36
= 68 cm2
