January 17, 2025Universities in Kerala – Education has always been at the forefront of government policies in Kerala and government invests significantly to provide high quality education in the state. The Higher Education Department of Kerala manages the universities and colleges and chalk out plans to improve the education outcome of the universities.
Kerala comprises Universities owned by the central government and state government. UGC and its professional councils approve universities in India to impart higher education at UG and PG levels. As per UGC, there are a total of 23 universities in Kerala. More than 100 colleges in the state are run by these 23 universities to facilitate higher education in Kerala. The universities in Kerala are divided into various specializations. The state has agriculture, technical, medical, and law universities for education in Kerala in a specific field.
Out of a total of 23 universities in Kerala, four are ranked under the universities category by MHRD under the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). The top universities of Kerala are – Kerala University (rank – 23), Mahatma Gandhi University (rank – 30), Calicut University (rank – 54) and Cochin University of Science and Technology (rank – 62).
