Value of Pi in Maths: Fraction, Decimal, and Trigonometry

img-icon

Value of Pi: Pi is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. It is named after the Greek mathematician Archimedes. He devised a method for calculating the Pi value. That is why Pi is often referred to as the Archimedes’ constant. The Pie value in decimal is 3.1415929. Furthermore, the value of Pi in fraction is 22/7. It has an infinite number of digits beyond the decimal point. Thus, it is an irrational number.

Pi is denoted as the Greek letter ‘π’. It is used in geometry to calculate the surface area, volume, and circumference of various three-dimensional forms. It is also used to compute the area and circumference of a circle. Furthermore, Pi is utilised in almost all calculations, including construction, quantum physics, communications, music theory, medical treatments, air transport, space flight, etc.

Value of Pi in Fraction and Decimal

Pi is used to solve various questions in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology. Hence, using the longer form of Pi may lead to difficulty in the calculation, because the longer form of Pi is 3.141592653589793238… Therefore, two notations for using the value of Pi (π) in Maths are used that ease the calculation as well as help in framing the questions.

The two values of Pi are:

  • Value of Pi in Fraction – 22/7
  • Pi Value in Decimal – 3.14

Note:

  • Pi is a mathematical constant that represents the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. It is an irrational number that is commonly rounded up to 3.14159.
  • We use the Pie value as 22/7 or 3.14 based on the problem for convenience during the calculation.

What is the Value of Pi in Fraction?

Pi is an irrational number, and being an irrational number, the numbers after the decimal point are never-ending. Therefore, for implication purposes, the fraction value was defined to make the calculations easy, and solve the numerical problems where Pi is involved.

Pi Value in Fraction = \(\frac{22}{7}\)

What is Pi in Decimals?

Check out the π value in decimal notation up to 100 decimal places below:

3.14159 26535 89793 23846 26433 83279 50288 41971 69399 37510 58209 74944 59230 78164 06286 20899 86280 34825 34211 7067.

What is the Value of Pi in Trigonometry?

In Trigonometry, the value of Pi in degree is 180 degrees. We use π in degrees to represent the angle in radians.

For example, if we are calculating the value of Sin π, it is equal to Sin 180 = 0.

How to Calculate Pi Value Yourself?

Those who want to calculate the value of Pi in Maths will need a compass or a round plate or any circular object, such as a plastic or steel ruler, an inch tape, or something similar for measurement. Thereafter, follow the steps mentioned below:

  • 1st Step: Using a compass draw a circle on a blank paper, or put the object on the ground, and measure around the edges, i.e., its circumference. Note its value as C= 82 cm, for an example.
  • 2nd Step: Now, measure the diameter of the circle, for paper, draw the circle using a regular plastic/steel scale, and for the object, use the tape. Diameter (D) = 26 cm for the example taken.
  • 3rd Step: Now, use the formula: Circumference (C) = Pi (π) x Diameter (D).

So, π = C/D = 82/26 = 3.14159…..
