Abiotic factors are the non-living things of the environment that have a significant impact on living organisms. They can help discover things like how tall trees grow, where animals and plants are located, and why birds migrate. The major abiotic factors are water, oxygen, sunlight, soil and temperature.

Water (H2O) is a major abiotic factor, and it is usually said that “water is life.” All living organisms require water. In fact, water forms at least 50% of almost all living things. Some organisms are composed of 95% water! Water is also necessary because other substances simply dissolve into it. This enables water to transport nutrients to cells and wastes away from them. Without water, animals become frail and confused, and they can die if they don’t get adequate water.

Soil is considered an abiotic factor since it is mostly composed of small particles of rock(sand and clay) associated with decomposed plants and animals. Plants use their roots to take water and nutrients from the soil. Soils are different from place to place and this can be a big factor in which plants and animals live in a particular area.
