Question

Yesterday you and a couple of your friends threw some solid substances, such as a few seeds(it is lighter than water), sand, salt, and iron filings into buckets filled with water. You were not aware that these substances were part of some materials that your father needed for a project at work. Now the substances are all mixed in the water. When your father found out about this he was not happy. He wants you to separate all the components. Design the procedure to recover all the substances.

Accepted Answer

The mixture of few seeds, sand, salt, and iron filings into buckets filled with water will be separated by the following methods:

(i) Magnetic separation- Iron fillings will be separated from the mixture by using a magnet. All iron fillings will be attracted to the magnet leaving behind the rest of the mixture in the bucket.

(ii) Sedimentation and decantation- As salt will dissolve in water, sand and seeds can be separated by this method. Sand will settle at the bottom and seeds will float on the top layer after keeping it undisturbed for some time. Seeds can be decanted to another container along with saltwater and sand will be left behind.

(iii) Filtration- Mixture of saltwater and seeds will be separated by filtration because seeds will not pass through the filter paper while saltwater will pass through it.

(iv) Evaporation- Salt can be separated from the salt water by evaporation. Water will evaporate leaving behind salt crystals.
