Answer the following question with respect to the given diagram : Why marble chips and no marble pieces are taken?

Surface area is the measure of how much surface is exposed to reaction. Hence for the same mass of the marble chips, small chips have a larger surface area than bigger chips, this means that rate of the small chips will be quicker than the bigger ones. Marble chips and no marble pieces are taken during the formation of carbon dioxide because the rate of reaction for the formation of calcium chloride can be changed with the change in size of marble chips. The smaller size of marble chips gives vigorous reaction. This means that bubbles will appear with a fizzing sound. Smaller chips react faster as compared to large marble chips.

Thistle Funnels are used to add liquids to a narrow-necked flask or another container. They are usually passed through a bung or clamped in place. The thistle funnel has a long stem and is used in the experiment, to add metal granules, in hydrochloric acid to low levels. If a simple funnel that has a low stem, would have been used, then the metals granules would drop in hydrochloric acid, which may lead to splashing of the acids, which can be harmful.
