A community of living organisms that interact with nonliving components in an environment is called an ecosystem. The structure of an ecosystem is categorised into biotic and abiotic components.

Abiotic: They are non-living physical parts of the environment are called abiotic components. The examples are temperature, light, water, etc.

Biotic: They the living things that have a direct or indirect influence on an environment are called biotic components. They are further divided into three types:

Producers: They are autotrophs which are able to prepare their own food by the process of photosynthesis.

Consumers: They are heterotroph and depend on the producers for food and nutrition. There are three types of consumers: herbivores (plant-eating animals), carnivores (flesh-eating animals) and omnivores (animals which eat both plants and animals).

Decomposers: They are saprophytes such as fungi and bacteria. They feed on the dead and decaying organic matter of animals or plants.
