Water potential refers to the potential energy of water in a system compared to pure water, when both temperature and pressure are kept the same. Water always moves from the region of higher water potential to the region of lower water potential. Water will move until the water potential is the same throughout the system. In figure 'a', solution A has a higher water potential than solution B. Thus, the water moves from solution A to solution B through the semipermeable membrane as the water moves from higher a region of higher water potential to the lower. After some time, when the water potential becomes equal, water stops moving across the membrane.

In figure 'b', the system has come into equilibrium, and there is no net movement of water molecules. This means the water potential between the two systems has come to an equilibrium.
