Parenchyma is a meristematic tissue and forms the major component in the plant organs. It is the first evolved tissue in plants and all other types of plant tissues are derived from it. So it is also called fundamental tissue and the precursor of other tissues.

The parenchymatous cells are living cells with prominent nucleus and cytoplasm with large vacuole that may either closely packed or have small intercellular spaces between them. The cells of parenchyma are generally isodiametric. The cell wall is composed of cellulose. The adjacent cells are interconnected through the plasmodesmata. These cells are distributed in all the parts of plant body viz. epidermis, cortex, pericycle, pith, mesophyll cells, endosperm, xylem and phloem.

Some modified parenchymatous cells are:

(1) Prosenchyma- Forms the pericycle of root and provide strength.

(2) Aerenchyma- It provides buoyancy to hydrophytes.

(3) Idioblasts- It stores tannins, oils.
