Look back at the diagram of the relay shown in the figure below. Why is the coil fitted with a soft iron core?

Soft iron acts as a magnetic core for the electromagnet in the case of an electric relay. This core creates a stronger and denser magnetic field of lines and works as a temporary magnet when current passes through it.
