Two metal spheres are placed close to one another and one of them is given a large negative charge. In a metal, the charges can flow inside without any extra energy. So the charges reside at the surface of the metals. When the other metal is placed near the charged one, it will attract the positive charges in the second metal, towards the negatively charged metal sphere. There will be charges induced in the sphere. With one side positive, the other side of the second metal, negative charges will be accumulated. Now when it is connected with a wire between the metals, the charges will flow between the metals until the potential of those becomes same. Or in other words, until the charges on each sphere become equal.
