The change in direction of light rays when they pass from one optical medium to another is called refraction oflight. Note: When light rays travel from one optical medium to another, they bend at the surface of separation of the two media.

The splitting of light into its component colours is called dispersion. Dispersion takes place because rays of different colours are deviated through different angles by the prism.
