Explain five benefits of creating transgenic animals.

Transgenic animals are animals that have a foreign gene deliberately inserted into their genome. Such animals are created by the microinjection of DNA into the pronuclei of a fertilised egg which is subsequently implanted into the fallopian tube of a pseudopregnant surrogate mother. Examples of transgenic animals are Dolly Sheep and transgenic mice.

Transgenic animals are produced for the following reasons.

Transgenic animals have a better growth rate, milk production, hair texture, etc.
Transgenic animals have improved resistance to infectious diseases.

Transgenic animals are developed to test safety of vaccines before being used on humans. Eg: polio vaccine.

Useful biological products can be produced by introducing into transgenic animals the portion of DNA (or genes) which codes for a particular product.

Transgenic animals are made to carry genes which make them more sensitive to the toxic substances than nontransgenic animals.
