Describe the process of spermatogenesis. Which hormones involved in this process and what are their functions ?

The process of differentiation of a simple diploid spermatogonium into a spermatid is known as spermatogenesis. It is a complex, temporal event whereby primitive, totipotent stem cells divide to either renew them or produce daughter cells that are transformed into a specialised testicular spermatozoon. It involves both mitotic and meiotic divisions and extensive cellular remodelling. Spermatogenesis can be divided into three phases:

(1) proliferation and differentiation of spermatogonia,

(2)meiosis and

(3) spermiogenesis

A complex process that transforms round spermatids after meiosis into a complex structure called the spermatozoon.

Spermatogenesis starts at the age of puberty at which significant increase in the secretion of gonadotropin releasing hormone $(GnRH)$ occurred. The increased level of $GnRH$ acts at the anterior pitutary gland and stimulates secretion of two gonadotropins–Lutenising hormone $(LH)$ and follicle stimulating hormone $(FSH)$ . $LH$ acts at the leadig cells and stimulates synthesis and secretion of Androgenes. Androgens, in turn, stimulate the process of spermatogenesis. $FSH$ acts on the sertoli cells and stimulates secretion of some factors which help in the process of spermatogenesis.
