The sex ratio is the number of females as per thousand males. In India, the proportion of females over male is falling every year. According to the census $2011$ , the sex ratio in India has $943$ females over $1000$ males. The main reason for this difference in sex ratio is female infanticide (killing girl child).

Factors that cause female infanticide:

Poverty can be a big reason for female infanticide. This is because people are not financially able to raise a child.

When an unmarried girl conceives, this type of situation also leads to abortion and causes female infanticide.

If the body of the infant does not grow properly due to some medical reasons, that also leads to the abortion of the child.

The ways by which female infanticides can be prevented are described as follows:

Awareness: Gender awareness raising aims to promote and encourage a general understanding of gender-related challenges, for instance, violence against women and the gender pay gap. For example, in Rajasthan, brides are imported from different states because of this gender imbalance.

Laws and regulation: There are many rules that are made against female infanticides, such as the prohibition of sex selection. There are several programs to encourage girl children like Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao Yojna.
