The given figure is a schematic diagram of the structure of a dry cell. An electrolytic cell converts electrical energy into chemical energy (causing chemical changes). A galvanic cell does the opposite. It converts chemical energy into electrical energy. A common example of a galvanic cell is the dry cell. Dry cells are used in flashlights, radios, clocks, etc.

It consists of a hollow cylindrical container made up of zinc that acts as the negative terminal of the cell. The carbon rod at the centre acts as the positive terminal. An ammonium chloride paste is used as the electrolyte. It has a little moisture to permit the flow of current. A mixture of carbon powder and manganese dioxide is filled in between the anode and cathode.
