Mahatma Gandhi's fight against oppression and injustice started in South Africa where he stayed for nearly $21$ years. It was in South Africa that Gandhi rallied for a society without ethnic discrimination. He is even now widely remembered for starting the peaceful non-violent Satyagraha in South Africa. While traveling to Pretoria with a first-class ticket, Gandhi was thrown out on the charge that non-whites are not allowed to travel first-class by a White man who summoned the authorities. This led him to dedicate his life to the betterment of the position of the Indians staying in South Africa. There exited nearly $50, 000$ Indian in Natal at the time and this led to the authorities to impose certain rules on the Indians to protect the Whites. Seeing these restrictions placed on the Indians, Gandhiji started the Natal Indian Congress to provide representation to these suppressed fellow Indians. Gandhiji soon chose the ways of petitions and letters to gain support against the discrimination that Indians faced by the Whites. It was here that Gandhiji's methods of peaceful protest started and gained popularity. He returned to India in $1915$ and was advised by Gopal Krishna Gokhale to tour the whole of India so as to understand the problems that Indians faced under British rule.
