Describe the external morphology of cockroach.

A cockroach is externally covered by a non-living, brown-coloured, chitinous exoskeleton composed of sclerites that have an arthrodial membrane between them. The body of the cockroach is divided into three regions- head, thorax, and abdomen.

The Head is hypognathous and attached to the thorax by a narrow and flexible neck. It has the following head appendages- antennae, compound eyes, and mouthparts. The cockroach has a mandibulate type of mouthparts that helps in 'biting and chewing'. The components of the mouthparts are the labrum, a pair of mandibles, a pair of maxillae, labium, and hypopharynx.

Thorax- It is the middle region of the body and consists of three distinct regions- prothorax, mesothorax, and metathorax. It has two types of appendages- walking legs and wings. There are two pairs of wings on tergites-fore wings and hind wings and three pairs of walking legs called prolegs, mesolegs, and metalegs, hence placed in class Hexapoda.

Abdomen- It is the posterior region of the body. It is long and narrow in males but short and broad in females. It has three appendages- anal cerci, anal styles, and gonapophyses.
