Mosses and liverworts are non-vascular plants having stem like, root like and leaf like structures. They are known as Amphibians of plant kingdom because these plants can live on soil, but depend on water for sexual reproduction. Antherozoids are released into water where they come in contact with archegonium through chemotactic movement. Zygote is formed inside the archegonia through internal fertilization.

In Pteridophytes, the dominant phase is represented by the sporophyte which is diploid, independent, photosynthetic, vascular plant body. It alternates with multicellular, independent, haploid gametophyte. Ferns can be heterosporous and homosporous.

Heterosporous are the plants that can produce two different types of spores. The two types of spores are the megaspores (female gamete) and the microspores (male gamete). Heterospores are produced by Salvinia. Homospores are produced by Equisetum. The male gametes released from the antheridia reach the mouth of archegonia that results in the formation of zygote.
