Matter can be classified based on its molecular composition as two types, i.e., pure substances and mixtures.

Pure substances are made up of single type of particles. The pure form of matter may be an element or compound. Elements are made up of only one kind of atoms and all the atoms of an element exhibit identical properties. Elements can be further classified into metals, non-metals, inert gases and metalloids. Examples for elements are iron, copper, carbon, etc. A compound is formed by the combination of two or more different elements that have been chemically combined in a fixed ratio. Compounds have fixed chemical compositions and are represented by definite chemical formulae. Examples for compounds are carbon dioxide, water, sodium chloride, etc.

A mixture is a material containing two or more substances in varying properties but not chemically combined. A mixture may be homogeneous or heterogeneous. A mixture in which the different kinds of molecules are distributed uniformly throughout the mass is known as a homogeneous mixture. Air is an example of a homogeneous mixture. A heterogeneous mixture is a type of mixture that does not have a uniform composition throughout its mass. It has visible boundaries of separation between the various constituents. Muddy water is an example of a heterogeneous mixture.
