Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar was born in a Mahar community at Mhow in the Central Provinces of India. He was educated at Elphinstone High School and College in Bombay. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Economics from Columbia University of the USA. He was called to the Bar from Gray's Inn. In 1924, he started his legal practice.

Due to his efforts, the British government announced the formation of a separate electorate for depressed classes. In independent India, he was the first law minister of the country. He drafted the Constitution of India. He was the first Indian to pursue a doctorate in Economics abroad. He also changed his religion to Buddhism.

In the year 1924, he founded the 'Bahiskrit Hitkarni Sabha' for the upliftment of the untouchables. He actively promoted inter-dining and inter-marriage among castes. In 1927, he led the Mahad Satyagraha to establish the right of the untouchables to draw water from a public tank. He led several non-violent campaigns for the cause of the depressed classes.
