Surat was an important port in Gujarat that became the emporium of western trade by emerging as the gateway for trade via the Gulf of Hormuz. It was also known as the gateway to Mecca as numerous ships sailed for Mecca from this port.

A chronicler, Ovington, has stated in his account that around a hundred ships from different countries could be found anchored on any given day in this port city.

Also, Surat became popular and attracted merchants, people, etc., from distant lands for its zari work—gold lace bordered fabric, which gained prominence among the West Asian customers and also in Europe and Africa.

In due course of time, cotton textile wholesale and retail selling shops emerged, which caused urban developments like rest-houses, pleasure parks for those merchants, traders, etc., for merchants who visited the place for its wide range of goods.
