Plants obtain water from the soil through roots through absorption. The root hairs are the unicellular cells where the absorption begins and reaches the xylem. The vascular tissue xylem comprise conducting elements i.e. tracheids and vessels.

Vessels are advanced elements of xylem that are long, cylindrical tube-like structure with lignified walls.

They have a wide or large central lumen. The end walls of the vessels are oblique and comprises perforation plates.

They are multicellular that is made up of many cells that are called vessel elements. They are interconnected through perforations or openings.

Vessel is an example of dead syncyte that is devoid of protoplasm.

Tracheids are the primitive conducting tissues of xylem that comprise elongated, tube-like cells with thick lignified cell walls. They contain a narrow lumen and the ends are tapered or chisel-like. The end walls of the tracheids are imperforated i.e. non-porous. The main function of tracheids is to conduct water and minerals and to provide mechanical support.

Xylem vessels transport water and minerals more efficiently than tracheids due to the presence of perforation plates. They also provide mechanical support to the plant body.
