Growth in plants is an intrinsic phenomenon that can be defined as a dynamic, irreversible permanent increase in size of an organ, its part or even an individual cell. It is accompanied by catabolic and anabolic processes mainly protein synthesis that spend energy.

Measurable- Growth at the cellular level is a consequence of increase in the amount of protoplasm. The measurement of increase in protoplasm is difficult, so quantities that are proportional to it are used to measure the growth. Therefore, the various parameters for the measurement of growth are: increase in fresh weight, dry weight, length, area, volume and cell number.

Growth can be expressed in terms of an increase in the cell number, e.g. single root apical meristem in maize which gives rise to more than 17,500 new cells per hour.
It can also be expressed as an increase in the size of the cell, e.g. cells in the watermelon increases about 3,50,000 times per hour.
Growth can be measured in terms of the length of the plant parts, e.g. pollen tube and can also be measured in terms of surface area, e.g. leaf surface area.
