The names, methane, ethane and propane have the similarity in their suffix i.e. -ane. This is the special feature of the IUPAC naming of the saturated hydrocarbons. These are known as alkanes. Alkanes are named by adding the suffix 'ane' along with the word root that denoted the number of carbon atoms in the chain. Word root + ane → Alkane. Meth + ane → Methane. Eth + ane → Ethane. Prop + ane → Propane. This is how the names are derived from the word roots.
