The melting points of the derivatives of the reaction between 2 , 4 -DNPH and various aldehydes and ketones are shown in the table: An aqueous solution of 2 , 4 -dinitrophenyl hydrazine (DNPH) is known as Brady's reagent. These precipitates have a sharp melting point. The melting points of the precipitates confirm the carbonyl compounds. A comparison of the melting point with a table of known values could identify the aldehyde or ketone. In the table ethanal, propanal and butanal are aldehydes having a somewhat higher range of melting points as compared to given propanone and butanone that are ketones present in the table.
