A test cross was carried out between a brown rabbit and a white rabbit. Five brown offspring and one white offspring were produced. Use a genetic diagram to show how this indicates that the brown rabbit must be heterozygous.

An organism that shows a dominant characteristic could have either of two possibilities. It could be homozygous for the dominant allele or heterozygous. Example: In the brown rabbit, the allele for brown coat colour (B) is dominant to the allele for white coat colour (b). The brown rabbit has the genotype BB or Bb. It can find out the genotype of an individual with the dominant phenotype for a particular gene by crossing it with one known to have the homozygous recessive genotype for the same gene. This is called test cross. A test cross between a heterozygous brown rabbit and white rabbit is shown below:

Based on the results, if any of the offspring show recessive phenotypic character (white colour), then it must mean that the brown coloured has an allele for white colour. Hence, it should be heterozygous.
