It functions to contract smooth muscles, dilate blood vessels, increase bodily secretions, slow the heart rate and is part of the autonomic nervous system. 7. Efferent neurons are motor neurons that carry neural impulses away from the central nervous system and towards muscles to cause movement. 8. The transmission of a nerve impulse along a neuron from one end to the other occurs as a result of electrical changes across the membrane of the neuron.

The branching of dendrons is called dendrites. These are the structures on the neuron that receive electrical messages. These signals will accumulate in the cell body of the neuron after being received by the dendrites.
