Find the oxidation state, type of hybridization and geometry of the following complex:

In the compound, the oxidation state of the ligand $({CN}^{-})$ is $- 1$ . Hence, assuming the oxidation state of nickel as 'x' we get:

$(x) + 4 (- 1) = - 2 x = + 2$

Therefore, the oxidation state of nickel in the compound is $+ 2$ .

According to Valence Bond Theory (VBT):

$3 d 4 s 4 p Ni - atom ⥮ ⥮ ⥮ ↑ ↑ ⥮ Ni (II) ⥮ ⥮ ⥮ ↑ ↑$

The complex will have square planar geometry if ${dsp}^{2}$ hybridization is involved. It will be possible if the metal contains one vacant $d$ -orbital for hybridization. This will be possible only if the two unpaired $d$ -electrons get paired up thereby making one of the $3 d$ -orbitals empty. Consequently, the complex would be diamagnetic due to the absence of unpaired electrons. Therefore, ${[Ni {(CN)}_{4}]}^{2 -}$ is ${dsp}^{2}$ hybridized and its geometry is square planar.
