The place where mercuric oxide is placed is called cavity. Take a small piece of charcoal block and make a fine hole (cavity) in the centre of it. Take a small amount of red mercuric oxide and put it into the finer hole of charcoal. The hole is known as cavity and the test is known as charcoal cavity test.

In the charcoal cavity test, by using a blowpipe, direct the flame into the cavity. After some time mercuric oxide turns into a silvery grey globule of metallic mercury.
