Describe the mechanism of water absorption by plants roots.

Absorption of water and mineral solutes takes place mainly by root hairs which are thin-walled slender extensions of epidermal cells of the root by the diffusion process. If a potential gradient is established by any means, water moves centripetally across the epiblema and root hairs and then through the cortex to the xylem via passage cells of endodermis and pericycle. Apoplast and Symplast pathways are the two distinct pathways by means of which water that is absorbed by root hairs enters deeper layers of root and reach the xylem.

In the Symplast pathway, water transport takes place across inner parts of the plants slowly. In the symplast pathway, water moves from one cell to the next via plasmodesmata. In this pathway, water enters from one cell to another by crossing the plasma membrane.

The apoplast consists of nonliving components of the root that comprise free space i.e., cell walls, intercellular air spaces, and xylem vessels. The initial flow of water across the surface layer of root up to the innermost layer of the cortex is considered to be mainly through this pathway.
