Ganga is a major source of water in India. It provides volumes of water for irrigation and drinking purposes. They run parallel to the Himalayan mountains, from Jammu and Kashmir to West Bengal, and drain into the Bay of Bengal in Bangladesh.

Narmada is the longest west flowing river. It originates in Madhya Pradesh and drains into the Arabian Sea.

Kaveri river flows through the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. It originates at Talakaveri in the Brahmagiri range in the Western Ghats and flows eastwards to drain into the Bay of Bengal.

The Brahmaputra originates in Himalayan Lake Manasarover in Tibet, where it is called Tsangpo. It flows eastward in Tibet and has a distance of about $2900$ km. It enters Assam planes from Arunachal Pradesh and drains into the Bay of Bengal.
