Benzoquinone is formed during the chemical reaction of phenol. It is an oxidation reaction in which the oxidation of phenol with strong oxidizing agents such as chromic acid and sulphuric acid, produces a conjugated diketone known as benzoquinone. In the presence of air, phenols are slowly oxidized to dark-coloured mixtures containing quinones. The following chemical reaction will take place-

The conversion of phenol to salicylaldehyde can be carried out by the Reimer-Tiemann reaction. In this reaction, phenol reacts with chloroform in the presence of sodium hydroxide to give an intermediate, a - group is introduced at the ortho position of a benzene ring. The intermediate substituted benzal chloride is hydrolyzed in the presence of alkali to produce salicylaldehyde. The following chemical reaction will take place to obtain salicylaldehyde from phenol.
