Describe the alimentary canal of man.

A group of organs that break the complex food molecules into simpler molecules constitute the digestive system. It consists of the alimentary canal and digestive glands like liver, pancreas, gall bladder and salivary glands. The alimentary canal includes mouth, oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine and anus.

Mouth: During the process of ingestion, food is taken through the mouth. The food is chewed with the help of the teeth.

Oesophagus: It is a narrow tube which connects the pharynx and the stomach. The chewed food is pushed down to the stomach by the peristalsis movement.

Stomach: It is a J-shaped muscular organ lined by mucus membrane. It contains gastric glands which are responsible for the secretion of gastric juices like hydrochloric acid, pepsin and mucus. The hydrochloric acid kills the bacteria present in the food and create acidic medium for the digestion of food.

Small Intestine: It is a long tube present in the abdomen and divided into three regions, i.e., duodenum, jejunum and ileum. The maximum absorption of food occurs in the small intestine. Its inner lining consists of villi which increase the surface area for the absorption of food.

Large Intestine: It is divided into three parts, i.e., caecum, colon and rectum. The large intestine does not secrete any enzyme. It stores undigested food and helps in absorbing water and salts from undigested food.
