The Portuguese came to India in search of spices and landed in the cabinet on the Kerala coast of southwest India.

After the invasion of the Portuguese, the cotton textiles along with the spices came to be called calico, and gradually it became the general name for all the cotton textiles.

By the early $18^{t h}$ century, England began protesting against the import of Indian cotton textiles as they got worried by the popularity of Indian textiles, wool, and silk in England.

In $1720$ , the British government enacted legislation banning the use of printed cotton textiles 'chintz' in England which came to be known as the Calico Act.
